Hummus – Food of the Gods

Forgive the title – I may be getting a little carried away, but lately I am totally addicted to hummus! It could have something to do with a recent sale on Cedars Hummus (my fav) – it was only $.99!!! I bought 6 containers, and since I am the only one in my house who likes the creamy goodness, I have been eating it almost daily.

It is such a great addition to just about anything. Most condiments don’t offer much nutritional value, but since hummus is made of ground chickpeas it is loaded with protein and fiber which makes it very filling. In addition, its creamy consistency makes it seem so sinful. Yet it only has 25 calories per Tablespoon. I have added it to brown rice for a creamy, flavorful side dish.

Tonight I had a whole wheat wrap spread with 2 Tbsp of Cedars Garlic Lovers Hummus (they spell it Hommus) and topped with just a sprinkle of shredded cheese. I put it in the toaster oven to so that the cheese would melt, then I added lettuce and shredded carrots, wrapped it all up and enjoyed – all for less than 200 calories. With those stats I could have had another, but I opted to enjoy my favorite healthy dessert – Mango Orange sorbet. Watch for the recipe coming soon.
